I received a Vanilla Prepaid MasterCard for $100 as a bonus from my employer last Christmas, and have been saving it up to treat myself. I had not even opened the packaging yet, but opened it at the register at the store and signed the card.

The card was declined repeatedly. Very upset, I ended up paying for my "treat" myself. The next day I called the helpline - this is an exercise in frustration! After attempting to navigate the automatic voice menu for fifteen minutes with no results, I was finally connected to a real person.

However, this was of no help either - it seems that the card was not activated properly at the time of purchase, and I would have to contact my previous employer to get the receipt from them from LAST Christmas. Great. They did not have the receipt, so I am SOL for my bonus. I asked whether the Vanilla company could track the number from the packaging (not the actual card number), but apparently they have no system in place to determine if a card had actually been sold.

Must be tough to run an actual business if you have no idea where your stock goes or if it has been sold or activated or not.

I guess they simply run on "donations" as in my case. Ridiculous.

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Monetary Loss: $100.

Preferred solution: Let the company propose a solution.
